Christianity: If God is omniscient and omnipotent, why all the stuff with Jesus and resurrection, etc.?

This is what drove me away from Christianity. Honestly, it makes no sense to me why a god would go through all this convoluted stuff just to forgive people or make things better. Why would he even feel the "need" to be worshiped by us. Why would he keep himself hidden, drop off a confusing book for us, and then damn some poor schmuck to eternal Hell for not believing it 2000 years later? Please don't throw Bible verses at me. I've read the Bible and it holds no more credibility with me than the Iliad and the Odyssey.
